For Parents
Bringing Your Kid to a Card Game Event?
Everything parents need to know before their child's first local tournament or open play night.
Do I need to stay with my child?
Most stores welcome parents to stay and watch. For young children (under 10), we recommend staying for their first few events. Many parents end up getting hooked on the games themselves!
What should my child bring?
Their deck (if they have one — loaner decks are often available), card sleeves to protect cards, a notepad to track life points, and water. Check the specific event listing for format requirements.
Is it safe? Who runs these events?
All stores on TCG Nexus are vetted local game stores with staff on-site. Tournament Organizers (TOs) manage events. Look for the "Family Friendly" badge on stores that specifically cater to younger players.
What age is appropriate?
Pokemon and Lorcana are great starting points for kids 7+. The Pokemon League Cup has a Junior division (born 2015 or later) specifically for young players. Yu-Gi-Oh! and MTG are typically better for ages 10+.
How much does it cost?
Open play nights are often free. Tournaments range from free to $30+ depending on the prize pool. A starter deck costs $15-30 and will last your child several play sessions before they need to upgrade.
What if my child doesn't know how to play?
Events labeled "Beginner" or "Open Play" are perfect for learning. Many stores offer free learn-to-play nights. Check the Resources section above for official tutorial videos for each game.
